Location & Proposed Plans for Old Allotment in Sadberge

Sadberge Parish Council’s Climate Change & Biodiversity Group have secured a long-term lease on the Old Allotment in Sadberge.

Sadberge may be a village surrounded by green fields but it actually has very few accessible areas close by of good nature value. Sadberge Parish Council has taken on the lease for a small peppercorn rent and plans to enhance the former allotment site further. We commissioned a survey from ecologist Martin Allen and he suggested making small changes as the site is rewilding nicely already.

As part of the lease agreement, we need to update the southern and western field boundaries. Therefore, the Parish Council have applied for a grant from the Moor House Wind Farm fund. If we are successful, in the coming weeks, we will replace the fencing and install a field gate. In addition, the Climate and Biodiversity Group will arrange a planting session for a selection of fruit trees and nut trees that will be of benefit to villages and wildlife once they have established. As the site is close to the former reservoir, we are also in liaison with the new housing developers to hopefully remove and relocate some plants of value from the reservoir fringes before the site works begin. The aim is that the former allotment area will be able to act as a refuge for species that will be affected by the house building works.
